What is DACAT?

Study Background:
  • Cephalosporins are antibiotics that are first-line treatments for pneumonia, urinary tract infections, surgical site infections, and more. However, the current assessment of cephalosporin allergy is not standardized and varies among allergy clinics.
  • Cephalosporins share similar chemical structures, so clinicians often unnecessarily avoid a huge class of useful, lifesaving medications.
  • DACAT is a clinical research study designed to gather empirical evidence that will allow for a more comprehensive understanding of cephalosporin allergy.
Study Structure:
  • 6 clinical trial sites across the United States
  • 300 participants
  • One screening interview followed by 2-4 in-person visits over the course of 1-6 months
  • Double-blind skin testing
  • Double-blind drug challenges
Study Objectives:
  • Confirm or rule out suspected cephalosporin allergy through drug challenge
  • Validate the usefulness of cephalosporin skin testing
  • Develop an optimal diagnostic approach to cephalosporin allergy

Examples of Cephalosporins:

  • Cefazolin (Ancef/Kefzol)
  • Ceftriaxone (Rocephin)
  • Cephalexin (Keflex)
  • Cefdinir (Omnicef)
  • Cefaclor (Ceclor/Raniclor)
  • Cefepime (Maxipime)
  • Ceftazidime (Fortaz/Tazicef/Ceptaz)
  • Cefadroxil (Duricef)
  • Cefuroxime (Zinacef)
  • Cefpodoxime (Vantin)
  • Cefixime (Suprax)
